Course title: Art

Course description: This course is an introduction to the basic techniques of art and focuses on observing, interpreting and rendering visual relationships between objects. The semester begins with fundamental projects that deal with contour, negative space and composition, and advance to more sophisticated projects such as still life, landscape and portrait drawing and painting. Various media are explored including graphite, charcoal, pastel, colored pencils and ink. Also, this course provides a comprehensive exploration of art concepts. Students learn basic color theory in addition to art styles from different artistic movements. Through assignments and class discussion, students refine their observational skills and compositional understanding to create cohesive and creative pieces. Projects include the use of collage, ink, watercolor and acrylic paints. Class assignments will be supplemented by writing short essays about student’s process of thought. There are art critique sessions and slide lectures.

Grade level: Grade 11, 12
Course description: Students in IB Visual Arts develop their aesthetic, imaginative, and expressive abilities through practical studio work as well as in-depth investigation and critical analysis in the form of an Investigative Workbook (WB). Within a thematic structure, students will have the opportunity to develop their sensitivity and appreciation of the visual world by investigating social, cultural, and contextual references and differences. They will explore a variety of materials and processes, investigate past, present and emerging forms of visual arts, and develop their own ideas into a series of solutions stemming from personal and creative visual inquiry.

Grade level: Grade 9, 10
Course description: Drama is a subject discipline which emphasizes the use of the intellect as well as the development of a person’s sensitivity, creativity, and the capacity to make reasoned, aesthetic decisions while extending the range of human experience. Because drama is concerned with the uniqueness of the individual, students who are guided in drama activities acquire knowledge of and regard for themselves and others as individuals. This discipline develops within the student a positive self-concept, creative thinking, and an ability to perceive and interact successfully with others. Since drama has language as its primary component, students involved in a drama program develop poise, confidence, ease, and versatility in verbal presentation. Drama develops the creative, critical, and communicative potential of all students.

Pre – requisite: None (previous experience preferred)
Grade level: Grade 9, 10, 11, 12
Course description: This course is designed to develop and improve students´ musical abilities and skills. The goal is to work directly on one or more instruments as a part of a band. Music theory will also be provided in order to consolidate practical knowledge. Students are expected to present a group project based upon a given musical style within the semester. Each student will have the chance to make progress according to his/her potential and previous knowledge. Practice at home may often be required.
