  Philosophy

.

  • We believe in the dignity and worth of each student and recognize the importance of his responsibilities to his fellow man in the world community.

  • We believe that all youth should have equal opportunity for education consistent with their individual capabilities and with their personal and social needs.

Goals                                                                           .

  • To provide a U.S.-oriented education for international students living in Uruguay and to help them with a smooth transition to any university by maintaining accreditation with a U.S. regional educational accreditation institution.

  • To provide secondary education to students who wish to study at a university level in Uruguay or other countries by maintaining the accreditation with Uruguayan education authorities.

  • To provide a program which will help students to express themselves fluently both in English and Spanish.

  • To provide a program which will help children in their efforts to reach their fullest potential.

  • We believe that change is a constant factor in life. Therefore, education should encourage in students the development of personal values and thinking processes which will facilitate the intelligent adaptability to a changing society.

  • We believe that learning is an unbroken activity, continued throughout an individual's life span. Therefore, education should foster independent thinking, exploration, and experimentation as a life long process.

  • Develop in each student a mastery of the skills of communication and learning.

History

Founded in 1958 in an urban neighborhood known as Punta Carretas in Montevideo, the Uruguayan American School recently relocated to its third facility in 2003. The new complex is located on a 7.500-acre (3.0 hectares) campus in an upscale residential suburb of Montevideo called Carrasco.

UAS was originally established to provide a US-style education in Uruguay. Most students were American citizens or Uruguayans whose parents chose this kind of education for their children. We continue to offer an expanded and improved American program combined with fully-accredited Uruguayan programs that give our students the flexibility of choosing from a wider selection of local and international universities.

For years, school enrollment averaged around 200 students. With our new, larger facility we now average around 280 students representing approximately 25 different nationalities from Nursery through Grade 12.
