At UAS, we understand that high-quality learning is a dynamic, social, and experiential process. Our approach supports the holistic development of each child—fostering autonomy, adaptability, creativity, and critical thinking within a nurturing and purpose-driven community.

Our mission is to ignite a love of learning while equipping students with the skills, values, and courage to become thoughtful leaders in their communities and beyond. Throughout Early Childhood and Elementary School, we use evidence-based teaching strategies to support every child’s growth.

Our curriculum emphasizes hands-on, real-world learning that builds essential life skills such as communication, collaboration, time management, and problem-solving. Students are encouraged to make connections across subjects, reflect on their learning, and develop positive learner traits like curiosity, perseverance, and responsibility.

OUR PROGRAM

Throughout Early Childhood and Elementary, students build strong foundations in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and mathematics. Our standards- and inquiry-based curriculum fosters creativity, innovation, and critical thinking. These core skills support deeper exploration of concepts across all subject areas, including science, social studies, the arts, and physical education. As students progress, they are encouraged to work with increasing independence. They explore big ideas, ask meaningful questions, and reflect on how their learning connects to the world around them—developing a lifelong love of learning in the process.

We are committed to educating the whole child. We understand that academic success is closely connected to social, emotional, and physical development. Our approach emphasizes hands-on, purposeful learning through inquiry, exploration, and collaboration. These experiences help children grow in confidence, connect with peers, and develop their natural talents in a nurturing environment.

Our dedicated team includes specialists in music, art, integrated technology, drama, social-emotional learning and physical education, enriching the curriculum and supporting well-rounded development.

Optimum class sizes ensure our teachers know each student as an individual. They forge supportive relationships with their students, encouraging them to reach their potential and become independent, confident learners. In the lower years (Nursery through Grade 3) every classroom has a highly qualified teacher as well as a teacher’s assistant who work cohesively to support student growth.

What We Teach: Curriculum and Standards

At UAS, our curriculum is based on the AERO Standards (American Education Reaches Out), which are aligned with the U.S. Common Core and specifically designed for international schools. These standards help ensure a smooth transition for students who may move between schools in different countries, while maintaining high academic expectations.

Student learning at UAS is organized around six transdisciplinary themes that provide a framework for meaningful, connected learning across subject areas. These themes are explored throughout the Early Childhood and Elementary grades using developmentally appropriate topics that reflect the students’ interests, needs, and stages of growth. Each Unit of Study is designed to help students engage deeply with the central topics and make connections across disciplines. You may find more detail in the Early Childhood and Elementary Family Curriculum Guide.

How We Teach: A Focus on Inquiry and Project-Based Learning

At UAS, we use evidence-based teaching practices designed to inspire curiosity, build skills, and deepen understanding. In elementary school, we focus on inquiry-based and project-based learning. These approaches encourage students to explore meaningful questions and apply their learning in real-world contexts.

By using central, content-rich topics, our curriculum remains rigorous while also engaging. Students learn through hands-on experiences and activities designed around their interests, questions, and needs. This type of active learning builds essential life skills—including communication, research, collaboration, time management, and critical thinking.

Inquiry-based learning empowers students to take ownership of their learning. It allows them to ask thoughtful questions, investigate, and discover answers—at their own pace. Project-based learning challenges students to solve real-world problems and showcase their learning in authentic ways, while also supporting their social, emotional, and academic growth.

If you would  like to learn more about how this works in the classroom, we invite you to watch this short, 4.5-minute video:

📽️ [Inquiry-Based Learning: The Ultimate Guide] – A simple and engaging explanation of this approach to learning.

Our goal is to help students make meaningful connections between subjects, understand how their learning relates to the world around them, and develop confidence, independence, and a love of learning. We believe that nurturing curiosity, resilience, and collaboration helps our students grow into capable, compassionate global citizens.

We are proud of the rich, multicultural community that defines UAS. Our students learn from one another every day—and this diversity strengthens the learning experience in ways that are truly unique in our region.

FOCUS ON WHILE CHILD LEARNING

At UAS, we understand that children thrive when their academic, social, emotional, and physical needs are supported in harmony. In our Elementary School, we are committed to nurturing the whole child—fostering not just what students know, but who they are becoming.

Our classrooms are active, engaging spaces where learning is hands-on and meaningful. The curriculum is developmentally appropriate and thoughtfully designed to inspire curiosity, encourage creativity, and promote connection. Activities are planned to support exploration, collaboration, and personal growth, helping each child build confidence and discover their unique strengths.

To further support whole child development, students participate in a rich variety of weekly specialist classes, including Art, Music, Physical Education, Drama, Integrated Technology, Library, and Social-Emotional Learning. While the frequency of these classes varies by age, all Kindergarten students and above engage in each area weekly.

These learning experiences go beyond academic content—they offer opportunities to move, express, create, connect, and reflect. They help children develop important life skills, expand their language and thinking, and build an early appreciation for well-being, the arts, and community.

At UAS, whole child learning is not an add-on—it is at the heart of everything we do.

UAS LEARNER PROFILE

At UAS, our goal is to prepare students not only for academic success, but for life beyond school. In a world that is constantly evolving—where information grows rapidly, and many future careers don’t yet exist—students need more than subject knowledge. They need the skills, attitudes, and mindsets that will help them thrive in any setting, anywhere in the world. That’s why the UAS Learner Profile is at the heart of our teaching and learning. This profile outlines five key attributes that we intentionally nurture in all students, across every grade level and subject area. These are not taught in isolation—they are woven into daily lessons, classroom discussions, collaborative projects, and school-wide experiences. UAS Learners are:

  • At UAS, the Learner Profile is more than a set of ideals—it is a living part of our school culture and a shared commitment that guides everything we do.
  • Globally Aware – They understand and appreciate diverse perspectives, cultures, and global issues.
  • Creative – They think imaginatively, explore possibilities, and generate original ideas.
  • Emotionally Intelligent – They recognize and manage their emotions, show empathy, and build healthy relationships.
  • Collaborative – They work well with others, contribute responsibly, and value teamwork.
  • Critical Thinkers – They ask thoughtful questions, analyze information, and make informed decisions.

These attributes are essential for success in today’s interconnected world. They empower our students to become adaptable, reflective, and compassionate individuals who are ready to lead and contribute wherever life takes them.

URUGUAYAN PROGRAM

The Uruguayan Program (UP) is an optional, fully accredited program designed for students who are fluent or nearly fluent in Spanish and wish to earn both the U.S. and Uruguayan Elementary School Diplomas.

Available from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6, the program offers an integrated, inquiry-based learning experience. Students follow the U.S. curriculum in English for core subjects such as Language Arts, Math, and Science, while Spanish Language and Social Studies are taught in Spanish, aligned with the official Uruguayan curriculum established by ANEP-DGEIP (Dirección General de Educación Inicial y Primaria).

All UP learning activities are delivered in Spanish and closely connected to the central themes and units of study in the U.S. program, ensuring a cohesive academic experience.

Upon completing Grade 6, students in the Uruguayan Program receive the official Certificado de Suficiencia Escolar, which enables them to continue their secondary education at UAS or transfer to local or regional schools. Thanks to Mercosur educational agreements, transcript validation is recognized across participating South American countries.

This program is especially recommended for:

  • Families from Uruguay or other South American countries
  • Families planning to return or relocate within the region
  • Families seeking university options in Uruguay or neighboring countries

By participating in the Uruguayan Program, students benefit from dual academic recognition, expanded future opportunities, and a deeper connection to their linguistic and cultural heritage.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

At UAS, learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends. Our After School Activities (ASA) Program is an important part of the student experience, offering fun, engaging opportunities that go beyond the classroom. Open to students from Early Childhood through Grade 5, the program is designed to help children explore new interests, develop valuable skills, build friendships, and stay active—all within a safe and supportive environment.

We believe that co-curricular activities are essential to a well-rounded education. Participating in after-school programs can boost confidence, foster a sense of belonging, and help students discover passions they may carry for a lifetime.

Early Childhood Activities
Students in Early Childhood are invited to take part in age-appropriate activities such as modern dance, swimming, arts workshops, yoga, fine motor skills and karate. These sessions are designed with young learners in mind, offering joyful, hands-on experiences that support physical development, creativity, and self-expression. Through participation, students gain confidence, make new friends, and begin discovering their unique interests and strengths.

Elementary Activities (Grades 1–5)
Elementary students can choose from a variety of academic, artistic, and athletic activities. By intentionally teaching social-emotional skills, we help our students develop resilience, compassion, and a strong moral compass—tools that will guide them in school and throughout life.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DAYCARE PROGRAM

For our youngest learners, UAS offers a nurturing Daycare Program designed to support early social and emotional development through structured play and caring supervision. Led by UAS teachers and aides, the program provides a safe, welcoming environment where children can explore, interact, and grow.

This 1.5-hour session is a gentle introduction to school life and serves as a wonderful transition into our Early Childhood Program.
